Nine Hyundai models receive Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ designations for 2019 from IIHS

  • Hyundai receives an industry-high nine designations
  • Four vehicles receive Top Safety Pick+, including the top-selling Kona and all-new Santa Fe

For the 2019 edition of the U.S.-based Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick awards, Hyundai vehicles have earned nine Top Safety Pickand Top Safety Pick+ ratings, the most designations of any automotive manufacturer.

“The safety of our customers and their families is our highest priority,” said Don Romano, President and CEO of Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. “Hyundai will continue to improve both the passive and active safety features of all our vehicles as we further expand our product range.”

The IIHS evaluates vehicle crash-worthiness based on impact protection in six tests – driver- and passenger-side small overlap, moderate front overlap, side impact, roof strength, and head restraints. Good headlight performance and the inclusion of advanced forward collision avoidance technologies are also requirements to score top marks.

In keeping with their dedication to reducing losses from motor vehicle crashes, IIHS raised standards for Top Safety Pick awards in 2019. “We challenged manufacturers to provide the best possible protection in a range of crash scenarios and equip vehicles with an automatic emergency braking system to avoid crashes, as well as offer headlights that give drivers confidence when traveling at night,” said David Harkey, President of IIHS-HLDI.

To be named a Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn “Acceptable” ratings in the passenger-side small overlap and headlight performance tests. Meanwhile, “Good” scores are required across the board for the prestigious Top Safety Pick+ rating. Four Hyundai models scored top marks in this battery of tests, widely recognized as one of the industry’s most stringent assessments of vehicle collision protection and safety systems.

New Hyundai vehicles are available with Hyundai SmartSense, a suite of state-of-the-art driver assistance and safety technologies including Forward Collision Avoidance-Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Collision Warning and more. Just as importantly, each vehicle possesses a rigid and safe construction thanks to our SuperStructure, ensuring drivers are as safe as possible when involved in road incidents.
