The Hyundai Veloster combines sportiness with economy

Economics 101

HYUNDAI_Veloster_1Hyundai priced their three-door hatchback Veloster to be budget-friendly. In addition to being easy on the wallet, it is a slick little car with a sports car heart. Hyundai used their Fluidic Sculpture philosophy to design the Veloster. They gave it muscles up front where it needed them and allowed for a long, sweeping line from the nose to the tail that is beneficial to its aerodynamics. That helps in the overall fuel efficiency no matter which of the two engines you put under the hood.

All of the three basic models are equipped with a 1.6-litre GCI 4-cylinder engine that provides 8.8L/100km in the city and 7.8/100km on the highway when paired with the 6-speed manual transmission. The automatic transmission numbers are slightly lower.

The Turbo and Rally editions are equipped with a 1.6L TGDI engine that delivers 9.4 and 7.0 L/100km in the city and highways with the manual transmission.

A unique aspect in the design of the four-passenger Veloster is the third door. This door is on the passenger side and swings out in order to give you access to the rear seat. There is 440 cubic litres of cargo space in the cargo area that is accessed through the hatchback.

Feature Rich

Just because the Veloster appeals to the budget doesn’t mean that the interior is not filled with the latest features and technology. In fact, Hyundai loaded up the interior with all the latest gadgets that are designed to make your life easier and make driving more fun.

The Bluetooth® hands-free phone system has voice recognition, so all you have to do is tell it to call someone on your list, and you don’t have to take your hands off the wheel. The remote keyless entry system makes it quicker to get into your car when the weather is bad. A steering wheel with mounted phone and audio controls on it make it easy to use the infotainment system with a touch of a button.

The driver’s seat adjusts manually or by using power options depending upon which model you choose. The side mirrors are both adjustable and heated, which means you won’t need to scrape them before you leave on a cold morning.


Even More Technology

When you add the technology package, you get a richer audio system that includes eight speakers with an external amplifier and a subwoofer. You also get a touch screen navigation system and projector beam headlights. It comes with a panoramic sunroof, too.

The Turbo Edition adds a turbo to the Veloster and 18-inch alloy wheels.

A Rally Edition comes equipped with the same turbo and adds carbon fibre accents and alloy pedals. Hyundai added a sport suspension that includes upgraded shocks, stabiliser bar and coil springs for even more response when cornering and better handling through long stretches of highways.  The Rally Edition only comes in matte blue.

The 2017 Hyundai Veloster models are on the way, and they will have a little more in the way of electronics by offering ApplePlay™ and other connectivity software, but many of the other things that make Veloster great will remain the same as the 2016 model.
